NUNS AT SEA

Helen Bevington
'A Change of Sky?'

Three nuns were aboard the Mauretania
Together, three aloof, psed modestly
Against the painted ship with orange funnels--

Three silent figures, dark and motionless,
Nuns in the sun, nuns on the glittering ocean,
Arrange to lull us to tranquillity.

Yet lying in my deck chair, wondering idly
Why the three ought to look more meaningful,
Not shadows in a seascape, restful merely,
I realized that in oils or water color
They would acquire, at once, a grave significance,
Mystic, profound, symbolic, melancholy.
